Psalm 99:6-7(KJV)

Psalm 99 · KJV

…

5Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

6Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.

7He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.

8Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.

Reflection

Today's verse is Psalm 99:6-7: Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them. Just before these verses, the psalm calls people to worship the Lord at his footstool, because he is holy. Then it names Moses, Aaron, and Samuel—not as distant heroes, but as people who called, and were answered. God spoke from the cloudy pillar, and their response was to keep what he taught them. Prayer and worship belong together: they listened to God and let his words shape their choices. Today, bring one honest request to God, then take one small step of obedience from what you already know in Scripture. This passage points to a God who hears and guides. Keep turning to him with trust.

Prayer

God, as we call on you together, help us trust that you hear us and guide us, even when your way is not yet clear. Give us attentive hearts to receive your wisdom and faithful spirits to live by your teachings in our choices each day.

Bible Study Notes

Historical Context

Psalm 99 is commonly grouped with psalms that celebrate the Lord as King. Its setting is worship centered on God’s holy presence, with Zion named earlier in the psalm; the precise date and occasion of its composition are uncertain. The invitation to worship at God’s “footstool” uses royal imagery: a king’s footstool signified his rule, while in Israel’s worship it could also evoke the sanctuary and the ark, understood as signs of God’s presence. Verses 6–7 recall three leaders from different periods of Israel’s story. Moses and Aaron led the people from Egypt and through the wilderness; Samuel served as a prophet and judge during the transition toward monarchy. Aaron was Israel’s high priest, while Moses is associated here with priestly or intercessory service rather than the hereditary priesthood. Their shared pattern is to call on the Lord, receive his answer, and live under his instruction. The “cloudy pillar” recalls God’s guidance and presence during the wilderness journey. These verses therefore join worship to covenant faithfulness: the holy King hears his people, speaks to them, and gives them commands to keep.

Language Notes

The Hebrew verb translated “answered” is from עָנָה (ʿānâ), meaning to answer or respond. It emphasizes that the Lord is not merely invoked in ritual; he responds to those who call upon him. “Testimonies” translates עֵדוֹת (ʿēdôt), a word for covenant commands that bear witness to God’s will and character. The phrase “cloudy pillar” is עַמּוּד עָנָן (ʿammûd ʿānān), literally “pillar of cloud,” recalling the visible sign of God’s presence and guidance in the wilderness. Together, these terms present a relationship in which God makes himself known and his people respond through trust and obedience.

Application

Set aside a few quiet minutes this week to call on God about one specific concern, then read a short passage of Scripture and identify one instruction you can put into practice. The examples of Moses, Aaron, and Samuel hold prayer and obedience together: they sought the Lord, received his word, and kept his commands. This does not mean that every answer will come immediately or in a dramatic sign like a cloud. It means we can approach God with confidence while remaining attentive to what Scripture teaches. Write down your request and the practical step you plan to take; revisit both later, giving thanks for God’s guidance and asking for help to remain faithful.

Discussion Questions

  1. When have you called on God during an uncertain or difficult moment, and how did you recognize—or continue seeking—his response?
  2. What practices help you listen for God’s guidance amid the noise and busyness of everyday life?
  3. The verse connects hearing God with keeping his testimonies and instructions; what might faithful obedience look like in a decision or relationship you’re facing now?
  4. How could our group encourage one another to pray, listen for God’s direction, and put his teachings into practice this week?
