Numbers 11 · KJV

15And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.
16And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.
17And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.
18And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.

Reflection
Today's verse is Numbers 11:16-17: And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee. And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone. The surprise is that God doesn’t answer Moses’ burden by asking him to become stronger or work faster. He gathers trusted elders to stand with him and shares the Spirit’s work among them. Wisdom includes making room for others. This week, name one responsibility you can share with someone trustworthy. You don’t have to carry it alone.
Prayer
God, when the work before us feels too heavy, help us welcome the support of others and share our burdens with humility. Give us wisdom to serve together, and let your Spirit strengthen us so we can care for one another faithfully.
Bible Study Notes
Historical Context
Numbers 11 describes Israel’s journey through the wilderness after the exodus from Egypt. The people complain about their hardships and longing for other food, and Moses feels overwhelmed by the responsibility of leading them. He tells God that he cannot carry the people alone. In response, God directs Moses to gather seventy recognized elders and officials at the tabernacle of the congregation, the central place of worship and meeting. Elders commonly served as trusted representatives and leaders within Israelite communities, while the officers helped administer the people. The group is not appointed to replace Moses but to share the work of leadership. God promises to meet Moses there and equip the elders to help bear the people’s burden. The passage continues with the elders receiving the Spirit and prophesying (Numbers 11:24–25), confirming their role. The account presents shared leadership not merely as practical organization but as a provision from God. It also recalls the counsel in Exodus 18, where Moses is urged to appoint capable helpers rather than judge every matter alone.
Language Notes
The Hebrew word ruach can mean “wind,” “breath,” or “spirit.” Here, “the spirit which is upon thee” refers to God-given enablement for leadership and service. God’s promise to put this spirit upon the elders describes their being equipped to share the work; it need not suggest that Moses loses a limited portion of spiritual power. The verb nasa, translated “bear” in “bear the burden,” can mean to lift or carry. It conveys the practical weight of caring for and governing a large community. Together, these words show that the elders’ appointment involves both divine empowerment and concrete responsibility: they are to help carry the people’s needs alongside Moses.

Application
Identify one responsibility that has become unnecessarily yours alone, whether at home, work, church, or in caring for someone. This week, name a trustworthy person who could share a specific part of it, explain what is needed, and agree on a clear next step. Delegating is not the same as neglecting a duty; it can be a way to serve faithfully without pretending that you must do everything yourself. Also look for opportunities to support someone who carries a heavy responsibility: offer practical help, listen carefully, or encourage them to involve others. Moses remained accountable for leading Israel, but God provided companions to help bear the load. Ask God for humility to receive help and wisdom to share responsibility well.
