Colossians 4 · KJV
…
16And when this epistle is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.
17And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.
18The salutation by the hand of me Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.
Reflection
Today's verse is Colossians 4:17: And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it. The phrase “received in the Lord” reminds us that Archippus’s ministry was a trust, not a title he had to invent or earn. Paul’s instruction is shared with the church, making this calling personal and supported by a community. “Take heed” means to pay attention—to care for what has been placed in your hands. You may not know every step ahead, but you can be faithful with the next one: the task, conversation, or responsibility already before you. Ask yourself today, “What have I received that needs my steady attention?” Then give it your care, not because you must prove your worth, but because it is an opportunity to serve the Lord. Ordinary faithfulness is how a calling is fulfilled, one step at a time. Keep going; the Lord is with you in the work he has given.
Prayer
Lord, help us receive the work you have entrusted to us with humility and gratitude, not as a title to earn but as a calling to serve. Give us courage and steadiness to attend to our ministry, encourage one another, and faithfully carry it through in your strength.
Bible Study Notes
Historical Context
Colossians 4:17 appears near the end of a letter that addresses a Christian community in Colossae, a town in the Roman province of Asia. The letter presents Christ as supreme and encourages believers to live out their faith in their households, relationships, and shared life as a church. Paul is traditionally identified as its author, though some scholars debate authorship; its precise date is also uncertain, with proposals commonly ranging from the early to late first century. The verse names Archippus, who is also greeted in Philemon 1:2 as a fellow soldier. His exact role and the details of his ministry are not specified, so we should avoid assuming what particular duties he performed. Significantly, the instruction about his ministry is to be conveyed through the congregation: “And say to Archippus.” This makes the encouragement public and communal, rather than a private admonition alone. The phrase “in the Lord” locates his service within allegiance to Christ. Paul’s words urge Archippus to attend carefully to the responsibility he has received and to bring it to completion, while the church participates by passing on the charge and supporting faithful service.
Language Notes
The Greek word translated “ministry” is diakonia, a broad term for service or an assigned task; it does not necessarily refer to a formal church office. Here, the wording emphasizes that Archippus has received a responsibility “in the Lord,” placing that service within his relationship to Christ. The verb translated “fulfil” is plēroō, meaning to fill, complete, or carry out fully. Paul’s concern is not merely that Archippus begin his work, but that he bring it to its intended completion. Together, these terms portray ministry as service entrusted to a person and faithfully carried through. The verse does not describe the task itself, leaving its specific nature open while making the call to attentive, completed service clear.

Application
Choose one responsibility you believe God has entrusted to you—at home, in your church, or in service to a neighbor. Write down one specific next step that would help you carry it forward this week, and set a realistic time to do it. If the work feels unclear or difficult, ask a trusted Christian to pray with you and help you discern a faithful next step. Archippus is addressed through the church, reminding us that service need not be a solitary effort. Seek encouragement and accountability, while remembering that the goal is not recognition or perfection but faithful completion. Ask God for patience and wisdom to keep serving in Christ’s name.
