Proverbs 23 · KJV

…

22Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

23Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

24The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

Reflection

Today's verse is Proverbs 23:23: Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. This passage asks us to treat truth as something worth pursuing—and never trade away. Its surprising picture is a marketplace: “buy” suggests truth may cost us effort, attention, or the humility to be corrected; “sell it not” says not to give it up for convenience. Then the verse places wisdom, instruction, and understanding beside truth. They belong together: truth is not merely something to agree with, but something to learn from and practice. So this week, when you receive advice or correction, pause before brushing it off. Ask, “Is there something true here I can learn?” Keep what is wise, and let it shape one small choice. Steady steps toward wisdom are worth taking.

Prayer

God, help us seek truth with patience and courage, even when it costs us comfort or demands our attention. Give us humble hearts to receive wisdom, instruction, and understanding, and keep us from trading what is true for what is easy or popular. Amen.

Bible Study Notes

Historical Context

Proverbs 23:23 appears within Proverbs 22:17–24:22, a collection commonly introduced as “the sayings of the wise.” The book of Proverbs gathers instruction for forming wise, just, and faithful lives, and its teachings often address young people learning how to act in family and public life. Proverbs is traditionally associated with Solomon, but its authorship and compilation are debated; the book brings together material from different sources and periods. In the ancient world, buying and selling were familiar parts of daily life, so the verse’s marketplace language makes its counsel memorable: seek what is valuable, and do not surrender it once gained. “Truth” here is not merely a correct statement; it can include reliability and faithfulness. Wisdom, instruction, and understanding name related qualities that help a person discern what is right and live accordingly. The verse therefore presents moral and spiritual formation as something worth sustained effort and lasting loyalty.

Language Notes

The Hebrew verb qanah can mean “buy,” “acquire,” or “obtain.” Its use here gives the pursuit of truth the vivid force of an investment: gaining it may require effort, discipline, and a willingness to learn. The word translated “truth” is ʾemet, which can convey truthfulness, reliability, or faithfulness, not only factual accuracy. The other terms broaden the picture. Ḥokmah means wisdom or skill in living; musar is instruction that may include discipline or correction; and binah is understanding or discernment. Together, these words describe a life shaped by what is trustworthy, teachable, and wisely understood. The command “sell it not” reinforces the value of holding fast to these qualities.

Application

Choose one area where you need greater clarity—perhaps a decision, a habit, or a strained relationship. Set aside fifteen minutes today to read a relevant passage of Scripture slowly, write down what it actually says, and note one assumption you may need to reconsider. If a trusted, wise person offers correction, listen before defending yourself and test the counsel carefully. Then name one action that would honor what you have learned, such as admitting a mistake or keeping a promise, and follow through. This practice gives truth the attention it deserves and helps keep convenience, pride, or fear from persuading you to trade it away.
