Psalm 86 · KJV

…

10For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.

11Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.

12I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.

13For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.

Reflection

Today's verse is Psalm 86:11-12: Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. “Unite my heart” is a striking request: David isn’t only asking to know the right way; he wants his whole inner life gathered around God’s name. He links learning with walking—“Teach me,” then “I will walk”—and lets that obedience become wholehearted praise. Prayer here is more than asking for help; it’s asking God to shape what we love so our steps and worship point in the same direction. Before one decision or routine task today, pause and ask God to teach you his way. Then take one small step that fits his truth, and thank him for it. You don’t need perfect feelings to begin; bring God your attention and your willing heart. Keep taking the next faithful step—your praise can grow along the way.

Prayer

God, teach us your way and help us walk in your truth. Gather our scattered desires into hearts devoted to you, especially when we feel pulled in different directions. Give us grace to praise you wholeheartedly and honor your name in all we do, today and always.

Bible Study Notes

Historical Context

Psalm 86 is headed “A Prayer of David,” though scholars recognize that the authorship and date of many psalms, including this one, cannot be established with certainty. Its speaker is a vulnerable worshiper who asks God for help; later in the psalm, proud adversaries threaten him (verse 14). The prayer belongs to Israel’s tradition of calling on the Lord as both compassionate and faithful, and it draws on language familiar from the wider Psalter and Israel’s worship. In the ancient world, “walking” in a way was a common image for conducting one’s life, so the request to be taught God’s way is a plea for practical direction, not merely information. “Fear” of God likewise means reverent loyalty rather than simple terror. The psalm’s movement from instruction to wholehearted praise shows that learning God’s way and worshiping God are connected: the petitioner asks for an undivided life shaped by trust and expressed in enduring praise.

Language Notes

The Hebrew phrase translated “unite my heart” uses yāḥēd, a form of the verb meaning “make one” or “unite,” with lēbāb, “heart.” In biblical Hebrew, the heart is the center of thought, desire, and decision, not only emotion. David’s request is therefore for an inner life gathered into single-minded devotion, rather than divided loyalties. “Truth” translates ʾĕmet, a word that can convey truthfulness, reliability, or faithfulness. To walk in God’s ʾĕmet is to live in the way shaped by what is trustworthy and faithful about God. Together, these expressions connect inward integrity with outward conduct: a whole heart learns God’s reliable way and follows it.

Application

Set aside five quiet minutes today to name one area where your attention or loyalties feel divided—for example, a decision, a habit, or a strained relationship. Pray Psalm 86:11 slowly, asking God to teach you what faithfulness looks like in that specific situation and to make your heart whole in its response. Then choose one small action that puts the prayer into practice: seek wise counsel, speak honestly, keep a commitment, or make time for prayer before acting. End by thanking God for one specific sign of his faithfulness. This practice turns the psalm’s sequence into a daily rhythm: ask for guidance, take a truthful step, and offer praise with your whole heart.
